SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash after a victim passed away at the hospital on Wednesday.

Troopers said the collision occurred Tuesday around 11:45 a.m. on I-85 southbound near mile marker 77 in Spartanburg County.

According to troopers, the driver of a Pontiac changed lanes, struck a guard rail, re-entered traffic and was struck by another vehicle.

The driver of the Pontiac was not wearing a seat belt and was injured. An elderly passenger had to be mechanically extracted from the vehicle and was also taken to the hospital.

Troopers said a second passenger who was injured died at the hospital the following day. The coroner identified the victim as 81-year-old Majorie Alice Brown of Inman.

She was pronounced dead Wednesday morning at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, the coroner said.

Brown was not wearing a seat belt in the crash, troopers said.

The coroner said an exam will be conducted to determine Brown's cause of death.

The driver of the Pontiac, 53-year-old Stephen Brown, was charged with improper lane change.

The driver of the other vehicle was uninjured.
