ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Greenville Attorney Reggie Gay with McNair Law Firm said the laws surrounding sexual harassment haven’t really changed since the 1980s. However, as baby boomers move out and millennials move in, he believes there’s been a shift in perception in the workplace.

"Fortunately, we have taught our daughters and others that they are just as important as men that they shouldn't have to put up with things like this,” said McNair.

On Wednesday morning, several people gathered in Anderson to get advice from Gay and his colleague Rita McKinney on addressing sexual harassment in the workplace.

Tony Brown, Operations Director at Foothills Alliance, decided it would be a good idea to sit in on the seminar.

“We want to make sure all of our people are treated with respect and treated as human beings and that nobody feels that they don't have any value,” said Brown.

Gay pointed to several ways the group could make sure their employees and coworkers felt that way.

When handling sexual harassment, he said it was important employers have an effective policy in place, train employees to understand sexual harassment, designate several people to report it to, always thoroughly investigate claims and take action.

“If you have someone who is conducting inappropriate behavior, take some appropriate action don't try to hide it, sweep it under the rug or try to keep that person there because they are important,” said Gay.

Those are all things Brown believed were key for making sure his employees know their worth.

“People are our most important resource so we have to keep them protected, make them feel safe, make them feel like this is a place where they are fulfilling their purpose and you know doing something that is meaningful every day,” said Brown.

Gay also pointed out that it’s important for employers to reevaluate their policies and procedures not only to protect their employees but also themselves.

McNair Law Firm hosts free seminars about different topics quarterly that are always open to the public.

There is another Sexual Harassment Workshop on Friday, January 26 in Greenville. Click here to learn more.
