GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said a Piedmont man has been charged with attempted murder after being accused of hitting a Greer police officer with a car

The incident happened on January 24 near J Verne Smith Parkway (Hwy 80) and Victor Avenue just after 8 p.m.

The Greer Police Department said it began when an officer was investigating a suspicious vehicle.

Greer police said the driver hit the officer with his car and the officer then opened fire. The driver of the vehicle was airlifted to the emergency room, and an officer was transported by EMS.

On Tuesday, Feb. 27, SLED confirmed the suspect in the case as Timothy Gibson, 40, of Eagles View Court in Piedmont.

Gibson was charged with attempted murder and booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Center on Monday, per online jail records.

The officer was treated and released from the hospital on Jan. 25. Warrants state the officer rolled over the vehicle and injured his knee.

SLED said the shooting was the fifth officer-involved shooting in South Carolina thus far in 2018 and the first involving Greer police. The Greer Police Department was not involved in any of the 49 officer-involved shootings in 2017.
