CHEROKEE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

R. Andrew Murray, U.S. attorney for the Western District of North Carolina announced the sentencing of a North Carolina man for a string of robberies at hotels and businesses across the state.

Murray said 27-year-old Stephen Russell Dean McCoy of Cherokee, NC was sentenced to 108 months in prison.

According to Murray, McCoy was also ordered to serve three years under court supervision after he is released and to pay $4,189 as restitution.

Murray said McCoy was charged in connection with robberies at hotels and business in Cherokee, Swain and Jackson counties between November 20, 2015 and February 10, 2016.

According to court records, McCoy showed a knife to an employee of the Quality Inn in Swain county, demanded money, and took $150 from the desk and $30 from the employee's wallet. The incident occurred on November 20, 2015.

Court records show that McCoy showed a knife to an employee and demanded money from an employee at another hotel 20 minutes later.

Murray said McCoy showed a knife to an employee and demanded money again from an employee at the Fairfield Inn and Suites in Jackson County. According to court records, McCoy grabbed the employee, threw her in a corner, and cut her hand with the knife when she tried to call 911. The incident occurred on January 26, 2016.

According to Murray, McCoy robbed Ric's Smoke Shop in Jackson County four days later. McCoy showed the victim a knife and demanded the cash drawer be opened. Court records show McCoy left the store with $1,724 in cash.

Court records show that McCoy pulled out a knife and demanded money from a clerk at a Dollar General in Jackson County on February 9, 2016. McCoy left the store with $442.38 in cash, according to court records.

Murray said McCoy and David James Littlejohn, his co-defendant, robbed a Microtel Inn in Bryson City one day later. According to Murray, McCoy pulled a knife on a guest of the hotel and told Littlejohn to get everything from the guest's pockets.

Littlejohn grabbed an employee, forced her on the ground, then took the key for the cash drawer and gave it to McCoy, Murray said. McCoy took $200 from the drawer, Murray said.

According to Murray, McCoy has previously pleaded guilty to one count of robbery within Indian Country, one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, and two counts of Hobbs Acts robbery.

Murray said McCoy is currently in federal custody.
