ABBEVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Abbeville County man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after being found guilty in connection with the 2016 murder of an Upstate woman.

The announcement came Friday in an official press release from the Solicitor's Office.

Court documents say 48-year-old Charles Tillman of Bell Road in Iva was found guilty of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime in the November 2016 murder of his long-time girlfriend, 30-year-old Christie Lynn Stutler.  He was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison after just over 2 hours of jury deliberation.

Man charged with murder weeks after Upstate woman shot in head

On November 8, 2016, Tillman called 911 just after 6 p.m. to report that his girlfriend Christie Stutler had shot herself while he was at work. An investigation by the Abbeville County Sheriff's Office, however, determined that Tillman beat Stutler and eventually shot her with a .22 caliber rifle.

"Domestic killers have plagued our state for far too long," said Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo following the verdict announcement. "The fantastic teamwork by Sheriff (Ray) Watson's investigators and our prosecutors ensured that this batterer-turned-killer received the justice that he deserves."
