SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A USC Upstate student proves that age is nothing but a number!

Frances Julian started her senior year at USC Upstate earlier this month.

“I just looked at myself in the mirror one day and said hey, there’s other things out there," said Frances Julian.

On paper, Frances Julian seems like your typical college student.  She goes to class, lives in an off-campus apartment and works as a photographer for the school newspaper, but this college senior is anything but ordinary.

“I’ve never been really treated any differently than if I was the same age as any of the other students,” said Julian, “They treat me like I’m one of them and I? feel like I’m one of them.”

Julian is 80 years young and currently working on her second bachelor’s degree from USC Upstate, where she is studying journalism.

“It helps you stay young,” said Julian, “I don’t feel as old as I am. I feel like I’m a whole lot younger.”

Julian first attended Upstate in the 1970s when she studied nursing.

“When I first came here there was just the two buildings on campus," said Julian.

Life got in the way and she had to stop attending, just shy of finishing her degree.

Though Julian eventually became a LPN and worked as a nurse for years, going back to school to get her bachelor’s degree was always in the back of her mind.

“I wanted to find out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life," said Julian.

Julian decided to go back to school and graduated from Upstate with a degree in interdisciplinary studies back in 2011.

“I just couldn’t imagine that I was actually going to graduate because it had been so long that I had been trying to get a degree,” said Julian.

Two years after graduation, Julian decided that she wanted to get another degree and is now just 8 classes shy of graduating with a degree in journalism.

“I want to be a photographer and to have my own studio,” said Julian, “I would like to take my own photographs of families and pets.”

Julian is getting some good exposure while at Upstate. She writes and takes photos for the school newspaper, the Carolinian. She’s checking goals off one at a time.

“I had a tutor and he asked me why I went back to school at my age and I said, I just want to figure out what I want to be when I grow up.”

Julian said she only paid around $100 to attend school full-time. That’s because anyone over the age of 60 can go to a state-funded school without paying tuition in South Carolina.
