According to the Pickens County Sheriff's Office, personnel saw smoke in the laundry area located near the back of the building. The Pickens City Fire Department responded to the scene, quickly extinguishing the fire. Officials confirmed that the fire stayed contained within the laundry area and did not pose a threat to inmates.

Inmates are not housed in that area, but some in nearby cells were moved to different cells as a precaution due to possible smoke dangers. The Sheriff's Office emphasized that inmates were not evacuated from the facility at any point in time.

Fire officials believe the fire was mechanical and started inside the drum of a dryer. Officials are working to determine the extent of the damage, but washers and dryers will likely be replaced.
