HARTWELL, GA (FOX Carolina) -

The Georgia Department of Public Health said two cases of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis have been confirmed in Northeast Georgia.

Officials said two people are being treated and a third possible case is being evaluated in Hart County.  Others who have been in contact with those people, including children, are being screened for the illness via blood testing and x-rays.

On Thursday, an official with the Department of Health and Environmental Control said GDPH contacted DHEC in South Carolina regarding the investigation.

SC DHEC is now conducting an investigation in the Upstate region.

The DPH has alerted hospital emergency departments and health care providers in Hart, Franklin and Stephens Counties to be on the lookout for possible symptoms.

Signs and symptoms of multi-drug resistant TB can include:

  • Prolonged cough
  • Coughing up blood or blood-stained mucus
  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Weight loss
