January isn’t normally a busy time for professional house cleaning services, but this flu season has been a different story. Local cleaning services like Merry Maids and Castle Keepers are both reporting a spike in requests for one-time cleanings, often following a flu case in the home.

Troy Knight of Castle Keepers says, “Once your family recovers from the flu it’s important to sanitize those surfaces especially high touch points, light switches, door knobs, faucet handles and handles on cabinets.”

Clients are calling for sanitation treatments on top of their regular cleanings. For sanitation treatments the professionals will use hospital grade cleaners on all the most-touched surfaces and they may also steam clean the floor, bathroom and even soft surfaces like furniture upholstery.

Jessica Swanson of Merry Maids Greenville says her staff is taking extra precautions. She says, “If we have a home we’re going into where we know the flu virus has just left, we have them wear face masks in that home.”

Knight says, “We’re taking precautions like wearing gloves when cleaning and if they’re not feeling well we encourage them to take the day. What we don’t want is for them to go into a home if they’re not feeling 100 percent.”

As for recommendations to keep the viruses away, most people understand the importance of frequent hand washing and keeping surfaces clean but Swanson says you should also wash hand towels more frequently during flu season because they’re sponges for bacteria. She also says if someone in your household gets sick, they should try to stay confined to one area.

“We know that can be hard to do at times,” says Swanson, “But if they stay in one are of the home that contains the virus to that area, makes it easier to clean and lessens the chance it will spread to the rest of your home.”
