SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Those watching the FOX series "The X-Files" this season might have noticed an important reference to Spartanburg.

On the season premiere of the show in early January, main character Dana Scully, played by actress Gillian Anderson, said that one of the show's villains is in the city, and in hiding.

We won't give away details of the storyline, but the mention of Spartanburg itself has local fans excited.

Mike Wojcik and his wife are among those fans, who have turned part their photography services business into a hunt for the show's villain.

"We go from eyerolls, to...one of our customers wanted the map (we have showing the the locations where we think he is), and he traced everything out and he's sharing it with his family," said Wojcik.

On the wall of one part of Wojcik's Spartan Photo Center is a map, with messages telling people that the show has featured Spartanburg.  The owners have asked customers to guess where the show's villain, known as "Smoking Man", may be living.

This season also has had the mention of the "Spartan virus", a fictional virus that is deadly to anyone who gets it, which Wojcik thinks may be an important part to the city's connection to the show.

"It probably originated here," he said.

Wojcik has been a fan of the show since it's original run in the early 1990s.  He said he plans to watch and see where and if the Spartanburg connection returns.
