SBI investigating officer-involved shooting in Buncombe Co.

BARNARDSVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is looking into an officer-involved shooting on Thursday night.

The Buncombe County Sheriff's Office responded around 2:30 p.m. to a domestic disturbance on Town Branch Road in the Barnardsville community.

Deputies said when they arrived on scene, they encountered an armed individual in the roadway near the home. A deputy discharged his firearm and hit the suspect.

Deputies identified the suspect as Dayton Ray Rice.

Rice was taken into custody and transported to Mission Hospital for treatment.

Deputies said a warrant was obtained for Rice's arrest for violation of a domestic violence protective order. The sheriff's office said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges against Rice are pending. 

SBI was contacted, as is protocol in officer-involved shootings, and is conducting an investigation into the use of force. 

The sheriff's office said the deputy involve is currently on paid administrative leave.
