LAURENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Troopers say a child was hurt on Thursday after being struck by an oncoming vehicle.

They got the call around 4:30 p.m.

Officials with SC Highway Patrol said the incident happened along US 221 near Miss Emma Lane, about 2.5 miles outside the city of Laurens.

Troopers say the 7-year-old victim attempted to cross the road heading east before being struck by a 2003 Mercury 4-door vehicle traveling south. The driver of the vehicle was not injured in the crash.

The child, however, was transported by EMS to Greenville Health System.

On Friday, we learned the name of the little boy is Bryson Edwards.  His family tells us he is in stable condition at GHS Children's Hospital.

Bryson's father, Corey Ricks, told us he, Bryson and Bryson's friend were playing cops and robbers with a Nerf gun and Nerf bullets in the yard on Thursday afternoon before the accident.  Ricks said, "I ran inside real fast to get some batteries for my walkie-talkie.  One of his (nerf) bullets went into the road and he must have ran to grab it and his buddy told him to stop.  By then it was too late."

Ricks told us he loves his son so much and has been by his side at the hospital since the accident.

We also spoke to Bryson's grandparents, who told us when the boy went to grab the Nerf bullets in the road, he ran into the mirror of the car going past.

Bryson's grandfather Billy Bowling shared this statement with us.

"I would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers for Bryson.  He is stable right now.  He will have a long road to recovery but with the support from family and friends I know he will be ok. Thank you."
