I-85/385 Gateway construction enters third year

Officials said drivers are starting to see major changes as the I-85/ 385 Gateway project enters its third year.

The first four of the new bridges and flyovers are under construction, and crews are simultaneously working on multiple road and underground projects in connection with the project.

The SCDOT’s contractor, the Flatiron-Zachry Joint Venture, expects to complete the following items during the early months of 2018.

  • Complete Concrete Paving work on the I-385 SB Collector Distributor and switch traffic onto newly constructed lanes.
  • Finish erecting steel girders across I-85 for the future I-385 NB to I-85 SB Bridge.
  • Continue Substructure and Wall operations on the Garlington Overpass Bridges at I-385.
  • Continue Grading and Storm Drainage operations in the I-385 median near Woodruff Road to be followed by Paving Sub-base and Barrier Wall work.
  • Begin Wall work for the new Ramp/Bridge from I-85 SB Collector Distributor to Woodruff Road. and follow with Bridge Superstructure work.
  • Continue a variety of operations at I-85 SB and NB near the Roper Mountain Road. Overpass including Walls, Grading, Storm Drainage, and Precast Girder erection.
  • Complete and switch traffic onto a new ramp from Woodruff Road. to I-85 NB Collector Distributor.
  • Begin asphalt paving on Roper Mountain Road and shift traffic alignment.

The $231 million project is expected to be completed in 2020.
