Newberry County drug roundup nets 24 suspects, 18 more sought

NEWBERRY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Forster said his deputies and other agencies were working to round up dozens of people accused of selling illegal drugs, possessing illegal drugs, and possessing weapons in an operation that began Tuesday afternoon.

In total, Foster said 106 charges had been filed against 42 suspects involved in the sale of crack cocaine, ecstasy, and marijuana.  24 have been taken into custody.

Sheriff Lee Foster said that the operation was a direct response to complaints from the community and for ongoing crime that also surrounds such activity.

“This was prompted by people that live in the neighborhoods that had complained loud and clear about street level drug dealing,” said Sheriff Foster in an email.. “Further, our intelligence showed that much of the neighborhood gunfire was a result of street level drug dealing and the protection of their turf.”

Sheriff Foster said the illegal drug trade also leads to thefts from those needing to supply their drug habit.

“The only way to stem these neighborhood shootings and random, rampant gun fire is to remove the cause,” Foster said. “We need the assistance of the community to be effective so if you see something, say something so we can react and together we will make a difference.”
