ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Anderson County Sheriff's Office said a suspect is in custody after leading deputies on a chase in a vehicle with a stolen plate.

A deputy on patrol on Wednesday saw a Ford Escort on Highway 24 which came back with a tag for a stolen Nissan. When the deputy turned on his blue lights, he said the vehicle drove into oncoming traffic to try to go around a transfer truck and flee.

The pursuit continued onto I-85 and Highway 76 before it was called off.

Deputies said a few minutes later, a state trooper spotted the vehicle turn into the parking lot of the Anderson Mall and both suspects fled into Belk. According to the incident report, 27-year-old William Asher II and a female passenger were located in the dressing room of the store.

The female passenger told deputies she was scared during the incident and asked him to stop driving, deputies said.

Asher's license is currently suspended for failure to pay traffic tickets, according to the incident report.

He was arrested and charged with driving under suspension, failure to stop for blue lights, reckless driving and receiving stolen goods less than $2,000.
