Palmetto Ale House boycotts Superbowl, Throwing "Honor Bowl" instead

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Millions of Americans will be tuning for Super Bowl Sunday.

"If you're going to protest, let's do it a different time other than at anthem," owner of Palmetto Ale House in Greenville, David McCraw said.

McCraw said he will not be showing the Superbowl at his business for a personal reason.

"As a veteran, I took offense to it. I feel that the players can kneel and protest at a different time, not necessarily during the anthem," he said.

McCraw served in the Air Force and has boycotted the NFL since September when some NFL players took a knee to peacefully protest racial inequality. Some received backlash by those who say the act was disrespectful to those who fight for the flag.

Instead of throwing a Super Bowl party, he's putting together an Honor Bowl. McCraw said a six piece band will be playing, including Edwin McCain's drummer.

Brandon P. Brown, a local activist said he stands during the national anthem but argues it is every American's right to protest when they see fit.

"This issue has been totally taken out of context," Brown said. "It was never about the troops, it was never about the American flag, it was never in the sense of the men and women who serve the community and do justice, it was about the issues surrounding police brutality."

Brown goes on to say having an open dialogue about this issue is important.

"Thousands of troops fought for this institution we call America, they fought for our rights. The constitution gives us basic rights. It is not a dictatorship. In a republic they have the ability to express themselves," Brown said.

McCraw said  he doesn't disagree with the message these players are trying to send, but has a problem with their timing.

The Honor Bowl will kick off Sunday at 6 p.m.
