UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Upstate firefighter is working to recover from severe injuries after he was struck by a car while directing traffic over the weekend, officials say.

Officials with the Richburg Fire-Rescue posted to Facebook asking for prayers for Dennis "Hookman" Howell. They say, Howell was struck by a car while directing traffic Saturday night in Union.

He was transported to the hospital where he is suffering from internal bleeding and underwent surgery. He will need several more surgeries, they said.

Howell's family released the following statement:

"Our family would like to thank the community for all the prayers for Dennis Howell. He has a long road ahead of him, and will require many different surgeries. He is a fighter, and our family has faith in God that he will pull through this situation. We ask that everyone continue to keep him in their prayers."
