The flu has hit the country hard, including in South Carolina, and medical experts aren’t seeing any signs of a slowdown.

If you’ve already had the flu and think you can’t get it twice, think again.

Lindsay Morgan is a nurse practitioner at Bon Secours St. Francis, and works at the Employee Wellness Clinic. She’s been busy.

She said, “Probably the most alarming thing I've seen this year is the severity of sickness. Healthy people and young people getting sick and within a couple days having severe bronchitis, severe pneumonia, having problems that otherwise I haven't seen in a healthy population.”

Morgan said, this is the worst flu season she’s seen since the 2009 swine flu circulated.  She confirms, if you’ve already gotten the flu, there’s a chance you could get sick again.

“You can get the flu twice. There are several strains of the virus.  As you may know, the vaccine targets three or four strains and circulates, but that doesn't mean there aren't multiple other strains that are circulating. So yes you can get sick twice.”

She said, don’t hesitate to get checked out, because these viruses need to be taken seriously.

“I would ordinarily say if you have cold symptoms, wait it out, use your at-home remedies and over-the-counter remedies to take care of your symptoms.  But with this flu I'm encouraging people get seen, be checked.  The worst thing that can happen is you're fine, but you might not be.”
