GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

All this talk of the flu has people seeking out ways to get better fast, or to prevent the flu from happening in the first place.  And that has some turning to natural remedies, including elderberries.

Upstate herbalist Jennifer Galbraith, from Meadowlark Farms tells us that the berries are known to be an immune booster that have anti-viral properties and can fight viruses in the body.

Garner's Natural Life on Pleasantburg Drive says they've worked hard to keep it on their shelves, since the demand is so high.

Vanessa Rampey is the Store Manager and said, "They're calling, they're coming in, they've seen it on social media, their doctors have said this may help get through it faster, they've never been to a health food store and they're asking for the elderberries."

The elderberry products at Garners include syrups, capsules, powder, even dried berries so customers can make their own syrup if they want.

We also checked in with an Upstate nurse practitioner about whether it's safe to use elderberry products to fight the flu.

Lindsay Morgan is a Nurse Practitioner at Bon Secours St. Francis.

"It hasn't been studied in medical studies to prove it's efficacy or that it doesn't interact with other prescription medications," Morgan explained.  "I would recommend if you want to take elderberry to talk with your nurse practitioner or doctor to make sure it's safe for you and won't interact with other medications."
