TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A Tucson man and woman are facing charges in connection with the death of their 6-month-old son.

In early February 2018, Zechariah MacDonald was accused of smothering his son Killian.

MacDonald, 22, was arrested and pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder and child abuse.

The Tucson Police Department said MacDonald was alone with his two young children at the family's home in the 500 block of West Prince Road. MacDonald told investigators he wanted to take a nap so he placed his son in a playpen.

When Killian began crying, MacDonald allegedly placed multiple blankets over the boy to muffle the noise.

MacDonald said he woke up several hours later and found Killian unresponsive.

On Feb. 23, Killian's mother Tamara Missy Fowler was also arrested on charges of first-degree murder and child abuse.

The TPD said Fowler allegedly knew MacDonald had previously put items, like blankets, over Killian to muffle his cries.

The Arizona Department of Child Safety said it had no prior reports about MacDonald or Fowler. The other child in the family's home was placed in foster care.

McDonald is being held on a $1 million bond while Fowler's bond was set at $25,000.
