Spartanburg police said a man was charged with arson and domestic violence after a fire broke out inside a condemned house that the suspect and his girlfriend were staying in.

The girlfriend told police they had been staying in the home and began arguing. Per incident reports, the woman said she locked Hilton Monk out of the back room and he became upset and threatened to burn down the house. A short time later, she noticed heavy smoke coming into the room.

Monk told police he accidentally knocked over a candle and then tried to put the fire out.

Firefighters told police they did not see Monk attempt to put out the fire until they arrived and that the woman told them Monk was trying to kill her, reports state.

Monk was arrested and taken to jail.
