GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Tyler LaMaster gets plenty of screen time. He's studying at Bob Jones University and wants to be a pastor. However, when he gets a call from an unfamiliar number he prays it's not a telemarketer.

"I get them not only from Greenville, but Pennsylvania, Arizona, all over," LaMaster said.

He says those calls can be tricky.

"A lot of times there's complete silence, or it's a robotic voice trying to get me to; or it's a cruise ship, saying I won a cruise," LaMaster said.

He blocks those calls and Deveren Werne, an IT specialist with Liquid Video Technologies in Greenville, says that's about all you can do.

"They have found new and inventive ways to call you and pretend to be either, a different number, a local number, or even your own number because of technology," Werne said. "They can be anybody from anywhere at anytime."

He says even if cell phone owners put their names on a Do Not Call List, that doesn't always stop telemarketers.

"If they're in India or they're in another country that law doesn't apply to them," Werne said.

However, his new phone, a Google Pixel 2, alerts him.

"When it rings the screen turns red and says this may be a suspected spam call," he said.

State Representative Rick Martin represents the Newberry County area.

"It's not just the annoyance of it, it's the scamming," he said.

He recently introduced the proposed bill that would dial up regulations and set fines for telemarketers.

"It's not going to be easy to stop, but we've got to get it started," Martin said.

He says he's a victim too.

"I've had my own number call me," Martin said.

LaMaster appreciates the effort because he's tired of all the hang ups surrounding telemarketers.
