Upstate businessman says there's training for active shooter situations

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE COUNTY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Upstate businessman who has ties to the school shooting in south Florida wants to educate people on the impact training can make in these unfortunate situations.

Gregory Tony, president of Blue Spears Solutions, was a sergeant for the Coral Springs Police Department for 12 years.  Today, he watched his brothers in blue endure a situation he's trying to prevent from happening again.

"We need to become a little more vigilant about taking proactive steps before incidents take place so we can mitigate some of the loss of life and increase the survival aspect," Gregory said.

He explained that with training and education, the number of casualties in active shooter situations would decrease - but it all starts with you.

"We have to start taking more active steps as individual citizens as part of a social responsibility that we cant become reliant that only law enforcement that only EMS or first responders are the ones that are responsible for mitigating and handling and determining the survivability of these acts," said Gregory.

That's what his goal is - to educate others with the tools, techniques, tactics, and equipment needed to help save lives.

"We've looked at case study after case study and recognized that anywhere between 30 and 40 percent of the victims are bleeding to death from otherwise survival injuries," he explained.  "When bullets first start flying, people are failing to appropriately take steps such as run or hide or secure themselves in an environments where they can barricade and fortify their positions behind doors."

He described the training as an investment.  It's just like insurance, but the most important thing is saving people's lives.

"We all invest in insurance policies on our vehicles. We invest in insurance policies on our homes and we spend these million dollar insurance policies we never use," said Gregory. "This is no more than another insurance policy that will help save your life if something bad occurs".

Greg says unfortunately it's after incidents like the school shooting in Florida that people reach out for the training, but he says being proactive is the best way to ensure you're ready in case you ever find yourself in this type of situation.
