The Greer community is rallying behind a teenager that has been hospitalized due to complications from the flu.

"I kind of saw fear in her eyes and I just had to let her know it was going to be okay," said the teen's mother.

Tina Vandergrift remembers the last words she exchanged with her daughter. She squeezed her hand and told her to stay strong, but in those moments she had no idea she wouldn't hear Cheyenne's voice for days.

"At the time I didn't think that was going to be the last conversation I had with her," Vandergrift said. "I mean any time your child wants to be held in the midst of something happening to them, that they are fearful you have to be there. So I told her I loved her and to be strong."

16-year-old Cheyenne Vandergrift was diagnosed with Type A flu last week and is now in critical condition at the Medical University of South Carolina.

"Sometimes I can't even put words to thoughts," Vandergrift said.

Vandergrift said she is still trying to process everything, she said it all happened so fast, just four days after she was diagnosed with the flu.

"We ended up in the ER with a really high heart rate and low blood pressure," Vandergrift said. "Then she ended up toxic and everything went crazy from there, like a whirlwind."

She is experiencing heart failure as a result of the flu, doctors are even talking about open heart surgery to remove two blood clots.

A teenager with a bright future, now hooked up to machines. Her family said no matter what happens moving forward they will not let their daughter forger about her dreams.

"She's a hopeless romantic and she wants three children," Vandergrift said. "She already knows how she wants to be proposed to. She's about glitz and glam, I already told my husband we are going to have to save big for the Cinderella wedding. We anticipate all of that, we don't discount any of her hopes and dreams regardless of how this all turns out."

The whole Greer community has been rallying behind the Vandergrifts, a barbecue fundraiser will be held to help raise money for Cheyenne's family.

The event will be held at 417 S. Buncombe Road on Saturday, Feb. 24 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
