Deputies warn public of fraudulent warrant phone scam

Officials with the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office say they've received reports of a fraudulent warrant phone scam in the area.

Deputies said callers state they are representing the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office. The people contacted have open warrants or a criminal summons, said deputies.

The Sheriff's Office said the calls are coming from the phone number (828( 338-8811. Victims are told to pay a "fine" with Walgreens Money Pak cards, and after purchasing the cards, they are directed to call 1(800) 779-8628 to provide the Money Pak card information.

Deputies advise anyone that receives a call from the aforementioned number not to answer. Investigators ask that anyone who has been an victim of this scam contact Buncombe County Sheriff's Office at (828) 250-6670.
