ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Upstate pastor who has been a friend to President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he planned to run for Rep. Trey Gowdy’s US House seat.

Pastor Mark Burns of Anderson said he planned to file his candidate committee paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Friday.

Burns is seeking the Republican nomination for South Carolina's 4th Congressional district seat, currently held by the retiring Congressman Trey Gowdy.

"America's future is tied to the prosperity of average Americans, Burns stated in a news release. “I think of this country kind of like a wagon with less and less people pulling and more and more riding. We need to combat the leftist, liberal and even socialist ideology that’s dividing our nation. The solution is creating economic opportunities over the nanny state dependency that's plaguing our low-income communities. Far to many of our black and brown brothers and sisters look to the government to take care of them. I want to change that focus to private sector market driven solutions. As a black man, I am able to say what white politicians cannot say because they don’t want to be labeled as a racist."

Burns concluded by saying he was uniquely prepared to help President Trump in Congress.

"President Trump's policies demonstrate that the way to fight government dependency is economic opportunity and I am uniquely prepared to help him."

Burns has said he is friends with the president and is a member of Trump’s Faith Advisory Council. He traveled with Trump during his campaign and even spoke at the 2016 National Republican Convention.

Burns is also the CEO and president of the NOW Network in Easley.
