GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

If you're driving down Interstate 85 in Gaffney, it's hard to miss the Peachoid.

Located at Exit 11, the peach-shaped water tower has been an iconic fixture of the city of Gaffney since 1981. But recently, the area around the Peachoid looks a little different.

A fence topped with barbed wire was recently placed around the area at the base of the water tower.

The Gaffney Board of Public Works said the fence was installed to deter vandalism after an increase in crime since the peach was repainted in 2017. The board said the vandalism has primarily involved painting or scratching names on the base of the Peachoid.

Other water towers in Gaffney have been fenced for decades. A dark colored fence was chosen to minimize distraction from the water tower's design.

The board said there are three to four vehicle parking areas at the front of the property with a walk-thru gate which will be open seven days a week during daylight hours.
