The Oconee County Schools District is asking parents to inform their students about how to handle a credible school threat as an uptick of reports are flooding social media in the aftermath of the tragedy in Parkland, Florida.

After the school shooting that claimed 17 lives at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the Upstate and districts across the country have seen copy-cat threats shared on social media.

Oconee County Assistant Superintendent of Operations Steve Hanvey said the spread of second-hand information on social media sites.

Hanvey said the district and law enforcement were aware of a rumor of possible threats against Seneca and Walhalla High Schools, but said there is no credible evidence of danger to the schools at this time.

Administrators and authorities are investigating.

The district asked parents to reinforce the following with their children:

  • If you witness a credible threat first hand (hear a student make a threatening comment or see something written that would indicate a threat), please discuss this immediately with a school administrator or the school resource officer (or contact law enforcement after school hours).
  • Please do not share messages with others that have been gathered from second hand information. This creates panic and stories only get embellished the more they are circulated – especially through social media.
  • Oconee County works diligently to create safe environments for our students and staff. Law enforcement and school officials will continue to investigate alleged threats. Individuals making or perpetuating threats to our schools will face school discipline and/or legal charges.
