Southside Christian students and teachers reflect on Billy Graham's legacy

Posted: Updated:

"Thank you for being dedicated to your life's work," Idell Koury said.

Koury is a teacher at Southside Christian in Simpsonville and said her life was changed when she listened to Billy Graham preach in person in New Mexico. If he stood in front of her today, this is what she would say:

"Thank you. His message was sincere, and his message was about Christ's love and I have to thank him," she cried.

Graham has preached messages so profound, news of the 99-year-old's passing has managed to strike her students as well.

"Just look at the difference that one man made. He started off just like the rest of us. He just chose to act on something he was truly passionate about - in this case, his faith. Who's to say that we can't take something that we're passionate about and act on that and make a huge difference?" Student Avery Anderson said.

"I can reflect back on passages that he preached and it helped me get through that tough time," student Austin Greer said.

"When you see people who have boldness in Christ like he had, that's when you see nations change and worlds change," student Jack Schubert said.

Students and teachers want to see the world to change for the better and hope Graham's death will serve as a global awakening.

"As we look at struggles that we are facing politically, racially, economically, his passing will have us re-evaluate who we are as Americans and that we can be united," Koury said.

"In this day and age, the world needs more Billy Grahams to rise up and be bold, and to preach out and help people with their faith," student Sam Davis said.

One crusade left a lifetime impact on this teacher - lessons that have already trickled down to younger generations and some that will never die.

"He has left a legacy and what we are trying to do here is to try and share that with our students who may not hear it anywhere else. We stand as a light as he stood for us, to lead many and others to Christ," teacher Sonja Ison said.
