In Greenville County, there's a special law enforcement unit in place within the district that has one goal, to keep kids and staff safe.

It's called the School Enforcement Unit and it's made up of deputies from Greenville County, as well as other local police departments in the county.

Spokeswoman Beth Brotherton said the district also employs some of their own members of the unit.  "We have former law-enforcement who work regularly on emergency preparedness and our safety plans and we have former law-enforcement who work in IT for us.  They work in our technology unit to help us track down some of these threats."

Sheriff Will Lewis tells us it's the only district in South Carolina to have a school enforcement division.

"Essentially the best way to put it is we treat the school district as a small town. And we do investigations only for the school district."

The district has also hired past law enforcement officers who help put together school safety plans and investigate online threats.  With 85,000 students and staff to protect, the district tells us they take all threats seriously

Brotherton said, "Just like a regular criminal investigation, we are taking every threat that is reported to us as serious and we are bringing in law-enforcement and using their expertise to help determine what we need to take action on and what is simply a rumor that's been passed among students."

Sheriff Lewis also told us as an added layer of law enforcement presence, he has instructed his deputies that if they're doing paperwork in their patrol cars, to park in school parking lots.
