MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

Archaeological investigation of the shipwreck in Baldwin County that could be the Clotilda slave ship is set to begin on March 1.

That's the world from the Alabama Historical Commission.

The commission announced the archaeological work conducted by the Alabama Historical Commission on the remains of the shipwreck will be focused initially on establishing a process for identifying the ship.

Lisa D. Jones, Executive Director of the AHC, said, "Africatown, the City of Mobile, and the AHC's public and private partners have proven to be invaluable during the planning of this investigation."

She also said, "We look forward to being onsite and beginning this process."

The wreck, which is normally covered by water in the lower Mobile-Tensaw Delta, was recently exposed by unusually low tides and located by a reporter for Al.com who covers the environment and conservation on the coast, Ben Raines.
