McDowell County Emergency Management said an advisory has been issued for the Youngs Fork Creek area after a petroleum spill.

Officials said the advisory applies to all areas along Youngs Fork Creek from the intersection of Rutherford Road and Georgia Ave to the North Muddy Creek.

McDowell County officials said they are investigating to determine if the substance is hazardous to humans or livestock. They are also trying to determine the source and contain the substance.

Emergency Management recommended residents in the area do the following:

  • Avoid swimming, wading or fishing in the area until further notice
  • Avoid skin contact with water, soil and sediment in or near the river
  • If skin comes into contact with contaminated sediment or water, thoroughly was the area with soap and water

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality will be conducting water quality sampling.
