GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Greenville police said a student has been arrested and charged after a threat was made at a school in the city.

The incident occurred on Feb. 22 at Greenville Middle Academy. In the case, a student was charged with disturbing schools after allegedly making threatening statements.

Greenville County Schools said administrators were notified one of the students threatened violence at the school. Law enforcement launched an investigation which led to the student being suspended and the disturbing schools charge.

The district said law enforcement determined the student didn't have access to a weapon.

Below is a letter the principal sent to parents concerning that incident:

Good afternoon, Greenville Middle Family,

As Principal of Greenville Middle Academy, and as a parent, please know that I share your concerns regarding school safety. There is nothing more important than the safety of our students thus making it our number one priority.

I’m calling to let you know about a situation that occurred at the end of the day today. We were notified that one of our students threatened violence at our school tomorrow.  We contacted law enforcement and launched an investigation, which led to the suspension of the student making the threat. The student’s family assures us the student cannot access a weapon.  However, in the interest of safety, district staff and our SRO will be visible throughout the school day.

Protecting the safety and security of our students and teachers is always our focus.  We were able to respond quickly because our students reported this information to our staff.  Please continue to remind your student  to always notify a teacher or administrator when they see or hear something that concerns them.

Thank you for your support. And, I look forward to seeing our students at school tomorrow.

The suspect's name was not released due to age.

The Greenville Police Department confirmed four other students from Hughes Academy, Woodmont, Beck Academy, and Greenville High School were also arrested last week in separate incidents. Charges include disturbing school and unlawful communication.
