ROCK HILL, SC (FOX Carolina) -

President Donald Trump’s approval rating among South Carolina residents is stronger than the national average, according to the latest Winthrop Poll results, which were released Wednesday.

The poll found that 42 percent of South Carolina residents approve of the job Trump is doing after his first year in office, while the disapproval rate climbed to 50 percent.

South Carolinians are much more supportive of the president than Congress, however. The poll found that only 11 percent approved of the job Congress is doing.

Gov. Henry McMaster’s approval rating was found to be at 47 percent, and the disapproval rate at 25 percent.

Nearly 61 percent of the people polled felt that the US is headed in the wrong direction, but 75 percent felt thought the economy is good and getting better.

The poll found that South Carolinians feel that the most important issues for the country are, in descending order: “gun control, politicians/government, followed by moral values, racism and immigration.”

Poll respondents said the most important issues South Carolina is facing are: "roads/bridges/infrastructure, education, jobs or unemployment, racism and gun control."
