(Meredith) -- A Florida middle school teacher was arrested after police said she had a "sexual relationship" with an eighth-grade student.
The 14-year-old victim told his parents Stephanie Peterson, 26, (also known as Stephanie Ferri) would buy him marijuana and send him nude photos, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. He also said Peterson would pick him up late at night and bring him home several hours later.
"The parents got wind of it, and they confronted the teacher about breaking off the relationship," Sheriff Mike Chitwood said in an interview with Click Orlando. "We believe sometime in January, they either resumed or continued the relationship. At that point, the family came to the police."
The teen said his grades suffered after their alleged "relationship" started in November, the sheriff's office wrote in a statement. Peterson allegedly told the victim if anyone knew of their encounters, they'd get in trouble.
"They put them in situations where they gain their trust, they gain their confidence and then here you go again," said Chitwood. "You have another person who's in a position of power, who abuses that power and is abusing a young student."
Peterson is charged with lewd or lascivious battery and one count of transmission of harmful materials to a minor.
She resigned from her teaching position at New Smyrna Beach Middle School on Monday, according to the school district.
The 26-year-old was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail Wednesday morning, and her charges carry a $25,000 bond.
