SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Officials at Lake Bowen Baptist Church said a parent accidentally packed a gun in a lunchbox that was sent with a child to the church’s Child Development Center on Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, when one of the parents was packing the lunch for their child this morning they inadvertently also packed their personal firearm for protection,” the church said in a statement sent to parents after the incident.

The church said children’s lunchboxes are placed in storage areas until lunch. One of the teachers discovered the gun in the box and safely removed the gun from the classroom.

The pastor of the church said the child's mother had put the gun in the pocket for safekeeping while she packed up the car and then forgot about it.

“It was then taken directly to our front office and put in storage and the parent was contacted. Thankfully at no time were any of our children or teachers in danger during this event today.”

DSS was contacted after the incident, the pastor said.

The CDC said such an incident has never occurred at the school and they are praying it never happens again.
