BOILING SPRINGS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A U.S. Army veteran received a mortgage-free home in the Upstate.

Medically retired Army Sgt. Aaron Hillis and his wife, Elizabeth, were given the keys to their new home in Boiling Springs on Friday.

The home was donated by U.S. Bank and Freedom Alliance, a charity that provides support to injured service members and military families.

Sgt. Hillis, 28, spent two years stationed with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Germany and was then deployed to Afghanistan for nine months. While on patrol in Afghanistan, he drove over an improvised explosive device, which went off under his feet and caused a traumatic brain injury.

Sgt. Hillis was awarded a Purple Heart after the incident. He also received five Army Commendation Medals and an Army Achievement Medal.

He medically retired from the U.S. Army in February 2017.

The home was donated by U.S. Bank through its Housing Opportunities after Military Engagement program and the Freedom Alliance's Heroes to Homeowners program. Real estate services provider Chronos Solutions also contributed to the repair costs of the home.

"This gift will definitely help ease a lot of financial stress and anxiety, as well as allow me to better focus on taking care of myself," said Hillis. "I'm so thankful to U.S. Bank and Freedom Alliance for this amazing opportunity."
