GREENVILLE COUNTY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Officials with Greenville County Schools said police are investigating after three students were caught with a gun near Hillcrest High School on Friday.

Beth Brotherton with the district said the Middle School Alternative Program (MSAP) students were found in possession of a gun at the high school's bus loop this afternoon while waiting to catch their bus home.

Brotherton said the students are transported to MSAP at Donaldson Center every day, but live in the Hillcrest attendance zone.

District officials said Hillcrest High School students noticed the middle school students acting suspiciously and alerted Hillcrest High School administrators. Brotherton said administrators immediately approached the students and were able to seize the weapon.

According to the district, students at all Greenville County Schools alternative programs are searched, scanned with a hand-held metal detector and are not allowed to carry backpacks.

Brotherton told FOX Carolina that based on a preliminary investigation, it appeared that one of the students had stashed the gun in the bushes Friday morning and retrieved it Friday afternoon with the intention of selling it to one of the other students.

The district maintains that there was no threat against Hillcrest High School, and noted that Hillcrest students acted appropriately, "doing exactly what we have asked them to do."

"They saw suspicious behavior and alerted administrators so they could follow up," said the district.

Officials with Simpsonville Police Department said no one was injured during the incident. The three students are being charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds, and one is also being charged with unlawful carrying of a handgun.

Police said they were alerted about three suspicious persons in the parking lot of Hillcrest High School and upon encountering the group, found that one of the subject had a handgun on his person.

Officers said none of the students ever entered Hillcrest High School.

Police are handling the investigation and charges, moving forward.
