SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Some users inject it, or smoke it.

"You really don't know what you're getting,"  Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said.

Heroin-laced fentanyl overdose cases are too common on Clevenger's desk.

"We can't express to the public how dangerous the drugs are we're talking about today versus where they were 15, 20 years ago," Clevenger said.

"This is not some tactic, this is the truth."

Investigators recently arrested Claude Simpson and charged him with possession with intent to distribute heroin.

He now faces federal charges, and according to a federal complaint he could be linked to the deaths of two women, potentially caused by overdoses.

"You take a teaspoon and you take 3 grams of salt- the equivalent of some of the fentanyl subgroups are deadly enough if you put that much fentanyl in your body, it will stop your heart, stop your lungs, it will kill you," Clevenger said.

The complaint shows after a 911 call in February, investigators found one woman unresponsive at Simpson's home.

"This is death on a stick, it's death in a spoon- please don't put this in your body," Clevenger said.

Five days later, another 911 call to an apartment where investigators found another unresponsive woman

"It is tragic, it is bad," Clevenger said.

Clevenger doesn't want a new name to come across his desk.

"The last thing I want, the last thing anybody wants is to have to go to a scene and look at somebody that can't look back at me and trying to explain to family how this could happen to them," Clevenger said.
