School board passes motion to close 2 Upstate schools

Posted: Updated:

The Union County School Board announced on Monday that the motion to close two Lockhart Schools at the end of the school year has passed.

Over one hundred people from the small town of Lockhart filled the school's auditorium just last week, fighting to save their schools.
The school board was meeting to talk about the closing of both Lockhart Elementary and Middle schools.

Parents and officials were working to convince the board to keep the schools open.

Ashley Castle, who has four kids at Lockhart schools, said, "I hope the school board changes their minds because as you see I have a lot of kids and they really love it here at Lockhart".

For the small town of Lockhart the school is a large part of their community and many say closing it would be like putting the nails in the coffin for the Lockhart community.

Lockhart mayor, Aliene Ashe says. "If we lose this school like we did the high school 11 years ago we will lose more on our identity".

For many, Lockhart Schools go on for generations.

"My grandpa finished school at Lockhart my daddy finished school at Lockhart and my uncle did. So why can't I?", says Trystan Garner, a 5th grade student at Lockhart as she stood in front of the board.

On March 5, the board passed a motion to hold a meeting on Monday to further discuss the decision. And on Monday, the board voted 8 to 1 to close the Lockhart Schools at the end of the school year.
