(Meredith) -- A stabbing on a Greyhound bus in California left five people injured, including a mother and her 3-year-old daughter.

Deputies arrested the suspect, Teresa Ann Andrade Madrigal, 48, on five counts of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of false imprisonment and another count of child endangerment, according to the Tulare County Sheriff's Office.

Passengers noticed Madrigal acting erratically on the bus heading from Las Vegas to Oakland on Monday, KFSN-TV reports. At one point, the bus driver stopped and asked the woman to exit the bus so they could talk. After their chat, he determined she was calm enough to return to her seat.

Police said as Madrigal walked to the back of the bus, she grabbed a 3-year-old girl from her mother and held a knife to the child's throat.

When the mom tried to fight back, Madrigal reportedly stabbed the woman in the abdomen.

Two passengers and the bus driver wrestled the child away and were hurt in the process. The suspect then stabbed herself in the chest and neck before the men could snatch the weapon.

"i jumped up and tried to grab the knife and almost stabbed myself," passenger Nathan Wanhala told KFSN. "I'm glad everybody was there and the bus driver did what he did and the gentleman behind me did what he did to stop her."

The child sustained only minor injuries. Her mother is recovering from surgery and expected to survive.

Madrigal is receiving treatment at the hospital before being booked into a pre-trial facility.
