OCONEE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

It's a small device with a big job!  A transmitter is giving some Upstate families peace of mind for their loved ones who tend to wander off because of cognitive impairments like Alzheimer’s or Down Syndrome. The device can help locate those who wear it.

It's part of a national program called "Project Lifesaver.”  It's run by law enforcement agencies, including in Oconee County.

The free program is popular and seldom has spots open. however, there are currently five open spots in Oconee County, and they're trying to spread the word.

Jimmy Watt with the Oconee County Sheriff's Office tells us if the people in the program who are wearing the transmitters wander off, their caregivers are told to call the sheriff's office immediately with their last known location.

Then, the law enforcement officers who are trained in the program, go to work, using a receiver to find the person.

Law enforcement can locate a person wearing the device within a one mile radius because of a frequency number that each one of the transmitters gives off.

Watt says it's all about peace of mind for the caregivers.

“Sometimes adults with Alzheimer’s or children with Autism or Down Syndrome might wander away from their homes or where they're staying.  So the program is there to be able to provide some safety for those citizens but also an extra layer of security for family members,” said Watt.

You have to live in Oconee County and set up an appointment with the Oconee County Sheriff's office to make sure your loved one is eligible for a transmitter.  They will also need a doctor's note.

You can check out this website to see if there is a Project Lifesaver program in your county.
