Northwood Little League celebrates 50 years

Posted: Updated:

For 50 years, players have been swinging away in Northwood's Little League (NLL) program. It’s the oldest operating little league in South Carolina.

"I think you look back over the course of Northwood's history and you see that this is a family operation,” explained Brad Wilson with NLL, “People have been bringing their sons and daughters out to Northwood since 1968."

It began as just a simple ball field at Northwood Middle School managed by volunteers in 1968. It has turned into Corey Burns Park which features five fields and baseball facilities. Jennifer Chew grew up on the ball fields as her father helped run the league in the 70's and 80's. The field was named after him.

"To be out there and just the atmosphere with all the kids,” said Chew, “I couldn't have asked for my kids to be involved in two better sports; baseball and softball."

Because it’s been driven by mainly volunteers and donations over its 50 years, people like John Rollins who used to umpire the games were important to its success. His kids went through NLL and now his grandchildren are continuing the Rollins’ legacy.

"To know this is a team. We do this together,” explained Rollins, “I think that was the big thing. It went with them through life like that."

The program has produced plenty of coaches like former Gamecocks coach, Chad Holbrook and player Michael Roth who is in the Chicago Cubs organization.

Wilson says they expect to be here for another 50 years to raise the area's next generation of ballplayers and men and women.

"From my perspective,” explained Wilson, “Northwood is the Upstate. Northwood is this community. It makes me feel good to see so many people coming out and supporting it."
