GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Firefighters said a blaze at the Plantation at Haywood apartment complex damaged 12 apartments Friday morning.

Dispatchers said firefighters were initially called to the complex on Cross Ridge with reports of heavy smoke showing.

The city later sent a text alert advising there was a "fire at the apartment buildings on Cross Ridge, near Haywood Road" and asked people to avoid the area.

Firefighters said 11 living units and the model unit were damaged. The American Red Cross said they are assisting 17 adults and 2 children affected by the fire.

All of the residents were accounted for but firefighters did have to rescue some pets from the building.

Firefighters found one woman's cat wandering near one of the burned buildings and reunited the animal with it's owner.

The cat's owner said a second cat was still missing.
