Cold & rainy Sunday followed by mountain snow Sunday night into Monday

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Light rain will continue on & off through much of the day Sunday with temperatures staying only in the 40s!

A switch-over to snow will happen in the mountains Sunday night. That's why a Winter Storm Warning is out for Yancey and Mitchell counties, while Buncombe, Haywood, Swain and Madison counties are under Winter Weather Advisories until Monday night where accumulating snow is most likely.

Meanwhile in the Upstate, only steady rain will fall during the morning and early afternoon on Monday with highs in the 40s and 50s.

Even colder air will move in behind the low Monday night to change the remaining precipitation over to snow across the North Carolina mountains.  A deep upper level low will keep a cool weather pattern across the region through the middle of the week.

Temperatures will remain below normal across the area until the second half of the week.  With this cool northwesterly flow, there is also a chance for additional snow shower activity near the Tennessee border through Wednesday.

Good news is that we'll be back in the 60s to near 70 by the end of the work week!
