LITTLETON, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies in North Carolina are investigating after a pastor and his wife were reportedly left in their home after being beaten and robbed by two burglars, according to WNCN. The pastor escaped with second-degree burns but was unable to rescue his wife, who perished in the fire.

WNCN reports John Alford and wife, Nancy, arrived their home in Littleton, NC Friday morning to find two burglars inside.

The burglars forced Nancy to drive to a nearby bank and withdraw money, and then placed the couple inside the home, and set it on fire.

John Alford is the pastor of Sanford Memorial Baptist Church in Brodnax, Virginia. The Concord Baptist Association posted an update on Alford’s condition on Facebook Saturday and asked for prayers:

Update of John Alford
Dear Association,
John is in stable condition with 2nd degree burns and there is some difficulty keeping him hydrated. The church met tonight to plan a prayer service for tomorrow. During their meeting, they were able to speak to John over the phone and he was able to say a few words to them. Continue to pray for John, his family, and the Sanford Memorial family. We will update you as more information is available.
Sanford Memorial invites you to join them for a song and prayer service at 11am tomorrow morning, March 11, 2018.

Deputies said the two suspects stole the couple’s gray 2010 Mercedes-Benz. Investigators confirmed the car was found in Haywood County on Tuesday but did not release the exact location of the vehicle.

The crime remains under investigation.
