Upstate woman guilty of DUI again in crash killing driver, critically injuring 10-year-old

LYMAN, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Spartanburg County solicitor said a woman admitted to driving drunk in a crash that killed a woman and seriously injured a child in January 2017.

Lauren C. Smith, 32, was under the influence when she crossed the center line on Hammett Road with her Ford Expedition and hit a Honda Accord. Due to the collision, a third vehicle also rear-ended the victim's car.

The driver of the Honda, 59-year-old Viola Lynn Jackson, died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Officials said a 10-year-old passenger in her car sustained serious injuries and was transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

First responders said they smelled alcohol on Smith at the scene of the crash. A blood sample revealed a blood alcohol reading of .21.

The solicitor said Smith was previously. convicted of driving under the influence in 2010.

For the 2017 crash, she will face a 15 year prison sentence followed by 5 years of probation.
