Scott, Gowdy react to replacement nominee for Secretary of State

After news broke on Tuesday of Rex Tillerson being ousted as Secretary of State in the Trump administration, South Carolina lawmakers reacted to the news.

Pres. Trump announced his intention to tap CIA director Mike Pompeo as Secretary. Gina Haspel is set to replace Pompeo as CIA director.

Sen. Tim Scott said he looks forward to hearing more about about Pompeo's plans for the State Department.

“I served with Mike in Congress, and I know how committed he is to ensuring our nation has a clear and strong foreign policy," Scott said. "With many threats looming, as well as potential direct talks with North Korea, I look forward to hearing more about his plans for the State Department and representing our nation as our top diplomat as his nomination moves through the Senate.”

Scott thanked Tillerson for his service and said he represented the nation well, both abroad and at home.

Rep. Trey Gowdy also issued a statement in favor of Pompeo, who he praised for his hard work and quality of service.

“Mike Pompeo is smart, hardworking, and uniquely qualified to serve as our next Secretary of State," Gowdy said. "From his time at West Point, to the private sector, to Congress, and most recently as the Director of the CIA, Mike has excelled at every responsibility given to him. The quality of his service is matched only by his commitment to the safety and betterment of our country. I look forward to his confirmation as Secretary of State."
