Police identify teen accused of murdering 15-year-old in Greenwood

GREENWOOD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Greenwood police said they have arrested a juvenile in the April 4 shooting that killed a 14-year-old boy.

made an The coroner has released the name of a boy who Greenwood police said died at the hospital after being shot at an apartment complex on April 4.

On April 4, police said they got the call around 7:30 p.m. Police said a woman reported hearing gun shots and saw someone fall to the ground. 

Police said they responded to Tennessee Court and Brown Avenue and saw people fleeing as they arrived on scene. That's when they found one person who had been shot in the chest.

Officers said EMS rushed the victim to Self Regional Hospital for treatment. 

“He's gone from his mama, his sisters, his brothers and his whole family. We're not going to see him no more,” the victim's grandmother said.

The coroner's office said the victim succumbed to his injuries and passed away at Self Regional Hospital at 8 p.m. His manner of death was determined to be homicide, the coroner said. 

“He was walking, minding his own business. He was having a day off from school and now this tragic thing happened to him," the victim's grandmother said.

The coroner identified the victim as Tidrekis Daquan Gary, 15, of Vaughn Street.

“We lost a 15-year-old kid last night. There’s a mother whose son didn’t finish high school and now she has to bury him. There’s no excuse for that in our community," said Officer Jonathan Link with the Greenwood Police Department on April 5.

Link said the victim was a sophomore and that the teen's life was taken because someone was angry and thought gun violence was they way to solve a dispute.

"We're asking parents to talk to their children and remind them that this is now to way to solve problems," Link said.

On Tuesday, Greenwood police said they arrested a 16-year-old male in connection with the death.

The teen was arrested and taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.

Police identified the suspect as 16-year-old De'andrevious Williams of Abbeville. Williams is charged with murder and possessing a weapon during a violent crime, officers said.
