SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office and community are rallying around a deputy currently battling cancer.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Deputy Doug Smith, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in his intestines and liver.

"I don't know what God's plans for people are, but I know one thing, we're here to help people," Sheriff Chuck Wright said, "This is a very small way to help someone and we're going to do our best to do it."

According to the GoFundMe page, Deputy Smith began treatments of radiation and injections that cost $17,000 per month. His oncologist and surgeon are suggesting additional costly treatments at a hospital in Texas to eradicate the cancer.

"I've heard from so many people since they found out I was sick," Deputy Smith said, "I've seen names on the Go Fund Me that I've dealt with over the last 30 years and some of them I haven't seen in 30 years. It's just unreal and really gratifying to know that people care."

In a statement on their Facebook page, the sheriff's office said, "Doug is a dedicated deputy who has been in law enforcement for years and is still working as much as he can. If you can, please help Doug with his mounting medical bills. We are all a big family at the Sheriff’s office, and when one goes through hard times, we are there to support them."
